Benson Com Report – Issue 52

October 10th, 2008 | News | by Ben Plikerd - Owner

Recently, Syracuse celebrated a great Independence Day and Flotilla weekend as the lake seemed to burst back to life for the Summer of 2008. Everyday, the deep blue colored waters splash and ripple, calling the sea-longing spirit in all of us. The calming waters remind us each year that we should celebrate the vitality of our lake community and those who support it, not just during the summer time, but year round. It is with a sense of gratitude that we express special thanks to the fine organizations and businesses that make Syracuse the great town it is. Each one is an integral part of the puzzle that makes our town one of the best towns of America. Benson Communications is proud to be a part of that legacy.

In this issue you will find the following topics discussed:

• Introduction
• Family Memory DVDs
• Sam’s Rant
• Benson Does It All!

1. Family Memory DVDs

Last month my favorite Grandmother passed away and it was a very hard time for me. After all the arrangements were complete, we finally had the opportunity to go through a lot of the photos taken of her throughout her life. It was a truly comforting thing to realize that my “grandma” (born 1920) had grown up on a farm in Southern Illinois, became “Rosie the Rivoter” in her 20’s, prayed night and day for a husband who fougt in North Africa, had two beautiful daughters, three ornery grandsons and four great-grandchildren. She really had a wonderful life.

When I was sharing this in a meeting here at Benson Communications, we started batting about the idea of doing Family Memory Videos. What a great concept!! We would take family photos and put them onto DVD with background and music to remember those who have passed away, who mean so much to us.

But why stop there? We can do a Family Memory Video so you can remember those trips you take now with your family. You can take all of those old photos you have and want to preserve forever and put them on DVD, with music and background for pennies a picture. This allows you to be able to review them in the comfort of your home without having to drag out dusty photo albums from the back of the closet. Just slip the DVD into your player and soon you’ll be walking down memory lane.

We are running a special for the months of August and September to launch our new project. Bring us your photos and we will prepare your own personalized Family Memory Video.

$49.95 for 1-200 pictures;
$79.95 for 201 – 450 pictures;
$109.95 for 451+

2. Sam’s Rant

The classic symptom of a fatally ill drive is easy to spot. I think of it as a death rattle — a metallic clattering sound from the disk. Just make sure the sound is coming from the hard disk. The blade from a cooling fan hitting its enclosure makes a similar sound, so pay attention to the tiny light on your computer that flashes when the hard disk is being accessed. If the flashes and the sound seem coordinated, it’s a sign you need to back up your information and replace the disk.
Other warning signs include trying to open a file and getting a message that the data are corrupted, occasional failures when you try to start the computer, and even times when the computer fails to recognize your hard disk. Most modern hard disks include a technology called S.M.A.R.T. (self-monitoring analysis and reporting technology). It’s a great tool, since the error messages are in something that approaches regular English. You might be told, with an on-screen message, that “smart hard drive detects imminent failure.” While that’s not the sort of message you’d like to see, it does give you advance notice so that you can back up the data on the drive. If you computer exhibits any of these warning signs give me a call right away so we can determine a resolution right away.
