Benson Com Report – Issue 51

October 10th, 2008 | News | by Ben Plikerd - Owner

Wow! The year is almost half gone. Can you believe it? There are many unbelievable things going on right now. For the first time in 100 years the Chicago Cubs have the best winning percentage in Major League Baseball. The price of a gallon of gas is over $4.00. It was one of the strangest winters, only to be followed by one of the coolest springs, all attributable to global warming. I remember in the 1970’s when we were headed toward the next ice age. One thing is certain; we should take care of the Earth. But isn’t that more of a function of taking care of your family and your neighbor? Could it be that the only thing that is really changing is the minds of those who get paid to think about such stuff and those wanting to cash in on the ensuing hysteria? You can be sure that we at Benson Communications are looking out for you.

In this issue you will find the following topics discussed:

• Introduction
• Safety Tips for Kids
• Buyer Beware – Sam’s Rant
• Spetacular Super Summer Saver Sale – Repair In shop only $20 bucks limited time

1. Safety Tips for Kids

With more time at home during the summer recess, it important to talk with your children about the hazards that abound on the World Wide Web. Regardless of the age of your children, this discussion is necessary and must be approached realizing that there are many levels of response based upon the age of your young ones and their ability to discern certain threats and situations.
Parents, please inform your children that they are not to give out their name, age, address, school, phone number, or picture without parent’s permission. This includes chat rooms, instant messages, email, surfing the net and even entering contests or registering for clubs online. They should also not open or accept e-mails, enclosures, links, URL’s or other things online from people they don’t know.
Instruct them that people aren’t always who they say they are and that an adult can pretend to be a kid online. So they should not meet with someone in person that they meet on the Internet unless my parent has agreed and will go with me. If they do receive or see something online that seems bad or weird, encourage them to log off and tell you right away.

2. Buyer Beware – Sam’s Rant”

Samuel Patrick, Computer Technician, has become our own in-house product experimenter. He has picked up some valuable information that he wishes to pass along to our readership. We think that is a great idea, so we will call this monthly feature “Sam’s Rant.” Here what he has to say this month:

“I’ve been looking for a good MP3 player for when I travel, so when I saw a beautiful Apple iPod Touch I couldn’t resist. Being refurbished it was $100 less than buying it brand new. So I whipped out my credit card and laid the $300 dollars down. Everything worked great until just after that wonderful 60 day purchase warranty wore off. No big problem.”

“I got on apples website, plugged in the serial number, and bingo 1 year warranty. So I started going through the site, trying to navigate to a service request form. I kept getting the same error page online. Next, I tried calling tech support. They said I needed to schedule a pick up using the website. Also, I learned that Apple wanted to charge me $200.00 up front, in case if it was determined that the damage was due to an accident and not a hardware failure. The second tech tells me no problem the web page will be back up in an hour.”

“The next day rolls around and I get a call from a guy from overseas. He actually helps me setup a pickup free of charge. He also gave me a lot of other helpful information about how to track my status, and how to update my iPod’s warranty information so I could make sure that it would remain valid for the entire year of warranty from my date of purchase. Only problem is that through some miscommunication error the email address he gave is coming back as invalid. So it’s back to the phone for me, and my opinion of Apple drops considerably. Unfortunately, customer service seems to be taking second place to company profits for a lot of large businesses.”

Thanks Sam!
